how to play line of defense

Line of defense is a free draw-to-protect puzzle game. A sausage dog sits under a beehive, and you get one line to keep it safe. Draw it, let go, and the line drops into place as a solid object. Then the hive shakes, the bees pour out, and the dog has to last ten seconds.

  1. Draw one line with your finger or mouse. The pen stops at the ground, the dog and the hives, and turns red when it's blocked.
  2. Let go and the line becomes solid and drops. Once it lands, it stays put.
  3. Keep every bee off the dog until the countdown hits zero. Less ink earns more stars.
  4. On some levels a red hatched circle around the dog is a no-ink zone, so you draw further out and let the line fall into place.

Keyboard: Arrow keys move the pen (Shift moves it faster), hold Space to draw, let go or press Enter to drop the line. H shows a hint when one is offered. R restarts, L opens the level list, and Esc goes back to the menu.

tips

  • A dome over the dog with both feet on solid ground is the classic shape. Check that each foot will land on something.
  • Draw a little above where you want the line to end up. It drops when you let go.
  • On a ledge or a pillar, the side with nothing under it needs a longer leg that reaches down past the edge.
  • Stuck on a level? Fail it twice and a hint button shows a line that works.

faq

How many levels are there?

Twenty-four. New ideas arrive every few levels: pits, two hives, no-ink zones, slopes, ledges, hives below, then bigger and angrier swarms on the hardest ground. The last levels beat most first tries.

How do stars work?

Survive and you get at least one star. Every level has a par line, the shortest one we know that holds. Use about as much ink as par for three stars, or up to half again more for two. The stars on the ink bar drop off as you draw.

Why did a bee get through?

Only through a real gap. Lines don't bend and bees can't push through them, so look for a foot that didn't reach the ground or an end that left the dog's head showing.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. The arrow keys move a pen, hold Space to draw, and let go of Space (or press Enter) to drop the line.
