how to play flagpole
Flagpole is a free daily flag quiz. A country's flag starts hidden under tiles with just one corner showing. Guess the country; every wrong guess uncovers another tile. You have six guesses to name it.
- Look at the uncovered part of the flag.
- Type a country, or browse the full list of countries. Small typos are fine: frnace still finds France. Tap a name once to fill it in, then again (or press guess) to send it.
- A wrong guess shows that country's flag next to its name, so you can compare colors, and uncovers one more tile.
- Name the country within six guesses. Easy starts with two tiles showing and sticks to well-known flags; hard cuts the flag into twelve smaller tiles.
Keyboard: Type on your keyboard, arrow keys move between suggestions, Enter guesses, Backspace deletes, and Esc goes back to the menu.
tips
- Colors narrow it down fast: red, white and blue flags alone cover dozens of countries, but green, yellow and red point to a handful of regions.
- Watch for shapes in the corner tiles: stars, crescents, crosses and emblems are big clues.
- Your wrong guesses show their flags. Use them to rule out lookalikes.
- A few flags are near twins, like Indonesia and Monaco, or Chad and Romania. Naming the twin counts as a correct guess.
faq
Is there a new flag every day?
Yes, at midnight in your time zone. The daily list goes through every flag before one comes back, and solo practice never deals a flag that's coming up as a daily in the next month.
Which flags are in it?
The flags of the 193 UN member states.
Where does the flag art come from?
From flag-icons by Panayiotis Lipiridis, used under the MIT license. The license travels with the files at /flags/LICENSE.txt.
How is it scored?
By the number of guesses it took, from one to six. The share shows a red square for each miss and a green one for the hit, never the flag.
