how to play on beat

On beat is a free rhythm memory game. We play an original two-bar drum loop. Each round, one drum drops out and you tap it back in. Your takes stay in the loop, so by round five the whole beat is yours. Every round is scored on timing, and a daily beat is the same for everyone.

  1. The first time, tap along to ten clicks so we can measure your device's delay.
  2. Listen: the loop plays with this round's drum turned up, and the grid shows the other drums.
  3. After a four-click count-in, the loop plays without that drum. Tap the pad (or any key) on each of its hits. Your taps land on the grid as you go.
  4. The help fades: the kick and snare stay on the grid while you play, the hat shows only while you listen, and the clap and perc are by ear (you hear them twice first).
  5. Each round is scored from 0 to 100% by how close your taps land, and the result shows your taps against the real hits.

Keyboard: Any key taps the pad, Enter moves to the next round, and Esc goes back to the menu.

tips

  • Headphones help. Bluetooth ones add delay, so wired is better.
  • Nod along during the listen. It's easier to keep a groove than to find one.
  • On the by-ear rounds, count the hits in each bar while you listen. Most drums repeat after one bar.
  • Missing a hit costs more than a slightly late tap, so don't hold back.

faq

How is timing scored?

We average how far each tap lands from its drum hit. A missed hit counts as 150 ms off and an extra tap adds 60 ms. 55 ms off on average scores 50%.

Is there a daily on beat?

Yes. Everyone gets the same beat each day, with one attempt, a streak and a spoiler-free share.

Why calibrate?

Phones and speakers add their own delay between a sound and your ears, and between your finger and the screen. The calibration measures it once and takes it out of every score.

Are the beats real songs?

No. Every loop is generated from our own synthesized drums.
